A 43-year-old undocumented immigrant was identified as a “youth soccer coach” in California and later accused of killing 13-year-old Oscar Omar Hernandez.
According to a report, the teen, allegedly murdered by this coach, died from acute alcoholism, as stated by a family lawyer. However, the reporters didn’t clarify that Mario Edgardo Garcia Aquino, charged with Hernandez’s murder, is an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador.
The report referred to Garcia Aquino as a “soccer coach” multiple times. When detailing the events surrounding Hernandez’s situation, Garcia Aquino was labeled a “youth soccer coach”:
Omar traveled to Antelope Valley in late March to see Garcia Aquino, at his Lancaster home. After Omar didn’t return, his family reported him missing. A murder detective from the Los Angeles Police Department, in collaboration with the FBI, later discovered his body in a ditch in Oxnard in early April. [Emphasis added]
In April, Garcia Aquino was arrested and charged in connection with the sexual abuse and murder of Hernandez, whose body was found on a road in Ventura County.
U.S. Attorney Bill Essayri remarked that Hernandez’s murder might have been avoidable had federal immigration laws been enforced in California’s sanctuary areas.
“It was a preventable crime; a reflection of ineffective border policies,” Essayri communicated to NBC Los Angeles. “We cannot accept illegal immigrants who disregard our nation’s immigration laws and attack children.”
This week, attorneys for Hernandez’s family disclosed that the young boy succumbed to alcoholism.
Other victims of Garcia Aquino have come forward. One individual shared that he was just 16 when he was sexually assaulted by an undocumented immigrant at his residence.
Garcia Aquino, currently detained by law enforcement, may face the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole for Hernandez’s murder.
