A Salvadoran man who was in the United States illegally and later convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in Virginia was arrested last week, authorities said.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), deportation officers detained Joe Alfredo Maldonado in Manassas, Virginia, on May 14.
“Joe Alfredo Maldonado’s brutal acts have proven that he is a significant threat to the residents of his Virginia communities,” said Liana Castano, director of ERO’s Washington, D.C. field office. “We cannot allow violent criminals to victimize our communities.”

According to ICE, Maldonado illegally entered the United States on an unknown date and location without being inspected, admitted or released on parole by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. He was arrested by Prince William County Police on April 19, 2014, for a misdemeanor of DUI. He was convicted in July 2014 and sentenced to 30 days in jail.
On April 25, 2020, Maldonadao was arrested by Prince William Police on suspicion of felony forcible sexual intercourse by coercion or threat against a victim over the age of 13. He was convicted in January 2021 and sentenced to 364 days in jail.

Immigration authorities attempted to file a detention request with the Prince William County Adult Detention Center in April 2020, but he was released before it could be filed. Maldonado will remain in ICE custody until his deportation proceedings are completed.
