An illegal immigrant who was previously deported has pleaded guilty to the execution-style murder of 25-year-old Ruby Garcia in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in March.
Brandon Ortiz Vito, a 25-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico, Guilty Ortiz Vite was convicted Monday of killing Ruby Garcia and abandoning her body along U.S. Highway 131 on March 22. Ortiz Vite is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 31.
Ortiz-Vito and Garcia were in a relationship at the time of the killing, prosecutors said, and that Ortiz-Vito was driving Garcia's car on U.S. Highway 131 when he pulled over the young woman and eventually shot her four times — twice in the head, once in the arm and once in the hand.
After Garcia's body was discovered on the side of the highway, Ortiz Vite contacted police on March 24, turned himself in and confessed to the murder.
“I called because I wanted to turn myself in. [for] “It's a murder I committed two days ago,” Ortiz Vito told the dispatcher, according to prosecutors. “I know what I did was wrong and I will serve my time. I just don't want to die in my heart.”
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials confirmed that Ortiz-Vite is an illegal immigrant who was deported from the United States to Mexico in 2020.
Ortiz-Vite is charged with offenses dating back to 2020, with a warrant being issued for his arrest that year for failing to appear in court on charges of DUI and driving with a suspended license. He also had run-ins with the law in 2017 and 2018.
