Illinois apologized after the gaffe led to a viral moment.
“Before we get into the content of tonight's game, there was clearly a disappointing situation around the jersey at halftime. After being selected 27th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, Shannon, who plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves, has been essential to reaching Illini, reaching the Elite 8 in the last year's NCAA Tournament.

His final college season was without some off-court issues as he was arrested in December 2023 and stopped after being charged with sexual assault and rape.
The 18-year-old accused Shannon of grabbing her and sexually touching her without consent at the bar on September 9, 2023.
Shannon was eventually resurrected after his lawyers challenged the claim. He was eventually found out in June 2024 that he had not committed any crimes of rape and sexual assault in Douglas County, Kansas.
Shannon expressed his excitement about Jersey's retirement. He said he came in shock when he heard what his alma mater wanted to do in just two seasons.
