Rep. Jan Schakowski, a leftist Democrat who has represented Illinois’ 9th Congressional District since 1999, is reportedly going to announce her retirement next month at the age of 80.
Politics It has been reported:
Rep. Jan Schakowsky is scheduled to announce next month that she will not seek reelection after 14 terms in the House, and has begun to inform the alliance of its decision to retire, according to two people who admitted anonymity to explain the private conversation.
The 80-year-old veteran Illinois Democrat confirmed in a statement that the announcement will be coming soon, but said, “We will announce our plans on May 5th. Stay tuned.” Schakowsky’s annual Ultimate Women’s Power Lunch is set in Chicago for that date.
Schakowsky is a former left-wing consumer activist who became a state legislator and ran for Congress upon the retirement of long-term lawmaker Sidney R. Yates (D-IL). She won the three-way Democratic primary in 1998. This includes billionaire JB Pritzker, who is currently serving his second term as governor.
However, her political ambitions were hit when her husband, activist Robert Creamer, was convicted of bank fraud and tax evasion.
Shakovsky remains a junior player in Washington, and has risen to national prominence through disaster, such as when he recently insisted that there are few women interested in manufacturing due to the word “man.”
