Illinois Dem ups pressure on House to release Gaetz report: 'We care about ethics'

Rep. Sean Kasten (D-Ill.) has accused former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) of sexual assault and detailed drug use allegations in a House ethics report he wants released. He was severely criticized for this.

“None of us would want to work in an environment where we could commit the crimes that Matt Gaetz is accused of committing. This includes allegations of sexual activity with an adult child,'' Kasten fumed during his speech. Saturday MSNBC appearance.

He called on the House Ethics Committee to release details of the investigation, even though Gaetz has resigned from Congress and declined his nomination for attorney general.

“We must remind the American people that we care about ethics in the House of Representatives,” he said.

“When elections come around, we will see that we are a country that is not necessarily perfect, but at least aspiring to the vision of our founders that no one is above the law,” Kasten added. To publish this report. ”

In recent weeks, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) has said he opposes releasing the report, but some Democrats have argued it should be brought to light. Last week, Mr. Kasten and Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) moved to force a vote on a resolution that would require lawmakers to vote on the record on how to handle the information.

“When you think about how tight the balance is in the House and how many Republicans there are who, frankly, may be turning a blind eye to sexual assault but genuinely don’t like Matt Gaetz, “There is a very real possibility that they will be forced to be released through a vote in the House of Commons,” he said.
