Illinois official recommends that drivers abandon DMV visits

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is offering New Year's resolutions to Illinois motorists. That means abolishing the DMV.

Democrats on Thursday announced the “Skip the Line” initiative to save taxpayers time and reduce historically long lines at motorist and motor vehicle service facilities (which Giannoulias shortened to “DMV”). announced that it will expand its online services for the “Run Online” program. Transactions can also be made by mail or telephone in cases other than online.

Therefore, Giannoulias urged them not to approach.

“I'm serious. Don't come unless you're 100% sure you need to visit our facility,” Giannoulias said at a news conference in Chicago. “The reason is obvious. Most people don't have to go to a DMV facility to get what they need.”

This extension includes various services. A website portal helps customers decide exactly what services they need and what steps they need to take next. If you need a visit, you can book online. From now on, you will receive a subsequent text message asking you to confirm or cancel. Currently, two separate phone lines serve only seniors and teens and their questions.

Additionally, new facilities have opened in the Chicagoland area that specialize in specific time-consuming activities. There are four stations set aside for seniors and their needs, and four stations set aside for those who need a road test for license renewal.

“What we're seeing is people see the expiration date and get anxious and don't know what to do, so they just go to the facility,” Giannoulias said. He said drivers between the ages of 21 and 78 with a clean driving record only need to visit a driver's facility once every 12 years.

Since the program began in September, the secretary of state's office has served 800,000 drivers by appointment, resulting in little or no wait time, Giannulias said. Of the 2.25 million drivers who will need to renew their licenses this year, 1 million will be able to do so online, by mail or over the phone, as will 10 million vehicle registration renewals.

Last year, more than half of the 1 million people eligible for remote license renewal still stopped at state facilities, and 3 million people made special trips to get their annual license plate stickers.

“We want to put an end to this situation,” Yanoulias said. “Our ultimate goal is to reduce the time tax, which means Illinoisans waste time waiting in line to receive basic government services or making unnecessary trips to their DMV.” It's about reducing the amount of time you spend doing it.”

Adding text messages to remind customers of upcoming reservations and ask them to confirm or cancel addresses an unexpected but “catastrophic” issue that arises from online bookings: no-shows. There are people who have multiple commitments and only book one and don't cancel the others. Customers failed to keep 40% of their promises, creating another headache for Secretary of State staff.

Giannoulias said customers will be alerted via text message of promises they didn't intend to keep, so they can confirm and cancel the appointments they want.
