Charges Filed Against Illinois Teacher for Student Sexual Abuse

In 2023, an Illinois State Attorney brought forward 52 new charges against high school teacher Christina Formella relating to sexual assault and abuse of students. A video from April showed the 30-year-old being extradited and taken into custody during a traffic stop, stemming from allegations of inappropriate relationships with a student.

Formella faced accusations of sexually assaulting a boy during a tutoring session at Downers Grove South High School back in December 2023. During her initial court appearance on March 17, she was charged with two counts of aggravated criminal abuse along with one count of criminal sexual assault.

On Tuesday, DuPage County State Attorney Robert Berlin announced the additional 52 counts against Formella, which include various charges related to sexual abuse. These new allegations reveal the existence of previously undisclosed attacks on students.

The charges consist of 20 counts of sexual assault, 20 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, six counts related to child indecent solicitation, and six counts of grooming, all classified as felonies. The investigation began when a 15-year-old victim, accompanied by his parents, reported inappropriate sexual contact allegedly committed by Formella, who also coached the boy’s soccer team.

Investigators found that Formella’s abuse reportedly started in January 2023 and continued until August or September 2024. During this period, the boy received multiple text messages from Formella, showcasing a pattern of grooming behavior. Allegations indicated that sexual acts occurred both at school and in Formella’s home.

Berlin emphasized the courage of the victim in coming forward amidst what must have been a very challenging situation. He also acknowledged the hard work of the DuPage County Children’s Advocacy Center and the legal team involved in the ongoing case.

Judge Mia McPherson recently denied a request for Formella’s pretrial release, and her next court date is set for August 4th. Bodycam footage from her arrest revealed moments of confusion as police instructed her to exit the vehicle. Reports indicated she cried in the backseat, speaking to her husband about her situation.

Following her injury—a broken collarbone—Formella began communicating with her victims on a school messaging platform, which eventually led to the sexual incidents being reported. This case continues to develop, shedding light on serious concerns regarding the safety and well-being of students.
