An Illinois community is reeling after a 14-year-old high school freshman basketball player suddenly collapsed and died during a game, according to reports. new york post.
Amari Kreit, a freshman at Momence High School, was playing in a junior varsity game against Tri-Point on Thursday night when she suddenly collapsed on the basketball court. The Kankakee County Coroner’s Office is trying to determine how the boy died.
Momence School District Superintendent Shannon Anderson released a statement Friday regarding this tragic incident. “We are extremely saddened to hear the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our Year 9 students,” he said.
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this tragic loss.”
Anderson went on to say that mental health counselors will be available to students and staff who may have been affected by this incident. “We are deeply grateful to the mental health and grief counseling providers in our neighboring districts and Kankakee County area who have volunteered their services to support our community during this time.” continued Mr. Anderson.
“Our main focus right now is to support each other and provide the resources our community needs to cope with this loss.”
Immediately after the incident, GoFundMe account set up For Clyte. The page aims to raise funds to give the teenager a proper burial, and its description reads: “We are asking for everyone’s help to give her the family life she deserves, no matter how small or large. And above all, we need prayers. Once everything is in place… Services will be shared.”
The fundraising goal is $15,000, and as of this report, the page has raised nearly $48,500.
The local sheriff’s office expressed its condolences on Facebook, saying, “The Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office supports the Momence School District during this difficult time. We ask all of our friends, family, and classmates to send our prayers to you.” Dedicated. We all remain #RedskinStrong.”
It is unclear whether the girl had a pre-existing medical condition that could have led to her death. The investigation is still ongoing.
