Ilya Sorokin did not take part in the Islanders' informal veteran skate following rookie camp on Thursday.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman speculated on the “32 Thoughts” podcast last week that Sorokin was “fighting something,” but it wasn't clear what that was.
Sorokin attended Matt Martin's charity poker tournament earlier this week and posed for photos with fans, but he did not appear to be wearing a cast or boot in the photos.
The Islanders also clarified that his absence on Thursday was not related to any issues on or off the ice, as some had speculated.
But it's unclear at this time whether Sorokin will be physically healthy or even on the ice at the start of training camp.
A few weeks before training camp, teams typically hold informal practices, called captains' skates, without coaches present.
But unlike the camps themselves, participation is not mandated by the teams, and players often begin participating as soon as they arrive in town for the season.
After the third goaltender position became an issue for two straight seasons, the Islanders invited Long Island native and NHL veteran Keith Kinkaid to camp on a tryout contract.
Marcus Hogberg, who played for the Senators for three seasons, was also signed during the offseason as the team's third-choice goaltender after posting a .914 save percentage in the Swedish league last season.

The Islanders officially begin training camp next Thursday.
