It was real, it was spectacular.
And after an unrealistic and unbalanced stick save by Ilya Sorokin, we can now add Eric Gustafsson to the list of players with a bewildered look on their faces.
The Islanders’ netminer leaned in to deny Gustafsson what looked like an open net chance in the first period of Tuesday’s game against the Maple Leafs.
It reminded me of Sorokin’s save against Artemi Panarin last season at Madison Square Garden and against Chris Letang at PPG Paints Arena last month.
Few NHL goalkeepers wield the paddle better than Sorokin. Sorokin’s heroic performance has helped keep the Islanders in his race for the playoffs all season.
The save allowed the Isles to keep the deficit to a manageable one goal in a period when the Leafs were dominant.
But it was by far the most amazing.
