Shashi Tharoor Addresses Terrorism at Indian Consulate in New York

In New York City, Congressman Shashi Tharoor emphasized India’s measured response to Pakistan’s terrorist activities following the tragic Pahargam attack that claimed 26 lives. He urged the global community to unite against terrorism.

During his remarks at the Indian Consulate, Tharoor mentioned that the first stop for the party delegation was a visit to a memorial on September 11, which he described as a poignant moment meant to convey a powerful message about their presence in the city.

“This is a shared issue,” he noted, adding that the visit aimed to express solidarity with the victims. “It’s a tragedy that requires a collective response.”

Tharoor explained that the delegation’s goal was to engage with diverse public and political opinions in the countries they visit, particularly regarding urgent global issues that concern many people.

He pointed out the Pahargam attack, noting the attackers deliberately targeted victims based on their religion, primarily focusing on Hindus. “The intention was clearly to incite division within India,” he stated.

Tharoor also highlighted the unity displayed by various communities, transcending religious divides, during the aftermath of the attack. “The malicious intent was evident, and sadly, India knows where such actions originate.”

He shared that within an hour of the attack, a group known as the Resistance Front claimed responsibility. This group has been recognized as a front for designated terrorists, raising alarms about their activities and connections.

“Regrettably, Pakistan has chosen the usual path of denial,” Tharoor said, citing efforts, with China’s aid, to remove references to the group from UN Security Council discussions shortly after the incident.

Addressing India’s reaction, Tharoor clarified that he represents the opposition, yet he has been forthcoming in his analysis of the situation. Highlighting the importance of strategic, coordinated strikes against terrorist bases, he mentioned specific sites linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad.

Tharoor stressed India’s intent to assert itself firmly and strategically in confronting terrorism, indicating that this wasn’t merely an initial response but a decisive statement. “This sends a clear message: India will not tolerate terrorism,” he concluded.

The party delegation included members across various political backgrounds, aiming to represent India’s unified stance on combating terrorism and reinforcing a message of zero tolerance against such threats on a global scale.
