Imam's 'Marriage Advice' for Minors Gains Traction in Berlin: Report

Concerns Over Cultural Integration in Berlin’s Neukölln District

Berlin’s Neukölln district has recently seen a rise in Islamic Imams and the controversial practice of offering marriage counseling to underage girls, following a significant influx of Palestinian and other hardline Muslim immigrants, according to an integration officer.

Güner Balci, who is originally from Turkey and works as an integration officer in the region, discussed her experiences in Der Spiegel. She mentioned the importance of letting her own daughter grow freely after experiencing the community’s shift toward radicalism. Balci observed that, during her childhood, there was only one mosque in Neukölln, whereas now the number has increased to about 30.

“We know of an imam advising a 14-year-old girl about marriage and suggesting that it’s acceptable for a man to take a second wife. The underlying issues become clear when you dig deeper,” she remarked.

Balci’s role focuses on helping newcomers assimilate into Berlin society. Although she noted that Neukölln had never been particularly friendly toward women, she now sees a concerning trend of “culturally and religiously enforced gender separation” fueled by clan dynamics and radical religious leaders.

She recalled that the demographic changes began in the 1980s with the arrival of Palestinian families from Lebanon, which brought alongside them a very patriarchal culture. “Girls were hardly seen, only when taken to kindergarten or while shopping with their mothers,” she explained.

According to Balci, many politicians remain unaware of the underlying changes until it becomes too late to intervene effectively. There are claims that local governments are even complicit in these shifts. Alarmingly, a radical Shia mosque is reportedly establishing a daycare center funded by the state.

“You can see women in black veils, and now there’s a daycare center in the back? It raises serious concerns,” Balci cautioned.

The ongoing lack of assimilation by Muslim immigrant communities into broader European culture has raised eyebrows. A report from the French government indicated that networks, such as the Muslim Brotherhood, are deeply entrenched in immigrant communities, promoting strict Islamic practices like wearing veils and observing Ramadan.

This report also highlighted the Brotherhood’s systematic approach to infiltrate various community roles, including shops, sports groups, and even dating sites, essentially overseeing Muslim lives. Additionally, the French government warned that these Islamic networks have long pursued a “Western Conquest Strategy,” aiming to weaken democratic structures across Europe and establish Sharia law. Germany was specifically mentioned as a key area of operation for the Muslim Brotherhood, given its historical ties to the movement’s foundations in Europe.
