Congressman Garcia Discusses Health Care Subsidies

During a recent broadcast of CNN News Central, Rep. Robert Garcia from California emphasized the urgency of health care subsidies, stating they are “needed” at this moment. He firmly rejected the idea of extending subsidies for an additional year as part of negotiations to reopen the government, calling it “unacceptable.”

Co-host Sarah Sydnor inquired if Garcia would consider a one-year grant extension to facilitate government funding. Garcia responded by stressing the immediate need for the grants, pointing out that some Republicans, like Rep. Mike Lawler from New York, are pushing for the extension to navigate through the 2026 midterm elections. He noted the pressing issue of rising health insurance premiums, which could double for some individuals. Many people are already struggling to afford health care, and there were broken promises from former President Trump regarding lowering health care costs, not to mention increases in grocery and housing costs.

“At this critical moment, we’re witnessing substantial hikes in medical costs, and some individuals have already been alerted about this by their insurers. We simply cannot accept proposals that would allow these premium increases,” he added. The fight now, Garcia stated, revolves around reducing health care expenses and opposing further tax cuts for billionaires.

Sydnor followed up by mentioning a proposal from Lawler, suggesting that Republicans would consider a one-year extension if Democrats agree to fund the government. Was that something Garcia could entertain? He quickly dismissed the idea, reiterating the dangers of allowing premiums to rise in the future. “We need to focus on the health care costs that average Americans are facing right now,” he emphasized, asserting that the current situation would disproportionately affect many, particularly those relying on Medicaid.

Garcia pointed out that millions could be affected by recent tax laws and criticized the lack of action from Republicans regarding the Affordable Care Act. He concluded by urging for a significant reduction in health care costs rather than continued tax breaks for wealthy individuals.
