Conflict Erupts in Rochester Over Immigration Enforcement
A tense situation unfolded in Rochester’s Park Avenue area of New York on Tuesday, as the presence of immigration agents, roofers, and protesters escalated. It ended with some tires being cut, and federal agents leaving the scene.
The incident took place at a residential workplace where at least one worker was detained. The others remained on the rooftop, refusing to come down. Various federal agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), conducted operations aimed at removing individuals believed to be undocumented immigrants.
As the situation developed, over a hundred protesters arrived, chanting slogans like “shame” and expressing their anger toward the agents, even labeling them “Gestapo.” According to reports, one CBP vehicle had to retreat after having its tires slashed, which drew applause from the crowd. Subsequently, the SUV was towed a few blocks away.
What started as a potential immigration enforcement operation turned into a four-hour standoff, with federal agents ultimately abandoning plans to detain additional workers. A source mentioned that the labor group, Western Workers Serving Agency for Farm Workers, played a role in mediating the standoff.
Meanwhile, the Rochester City Council had recently voted to formally endorse its sanctuary policy, which aims to protect immigrants within the community. Union representatives emphasized their commitment to supporting workers and advocating for dignity and justice amid rising tensions over immigration enforcement under the Trump administration.
Tom Homan, a key figure in the White House’s immigration strategy, commented on the administration’s approach, stating that public safety and national security were the top priorities. He defended the actions of federal agents, suggesting that those who have entered the country unlawfully have “fooled the system.”
