Controversy in Virginia Gubernatorial Race Over Immigration

Following a heated debate between Virginia gubernatorial candidates Winsome Earl Sears, a Republican, and Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) informed Fox News Digital about recent detainer requests for two teenage individuals accused of illegal immigration. These teens allegedly fired a gun on an interstate in Virginia.

Earl Sears, who emigrated from Jamaica, accused Spanberger of wanting to make Virginia a “sanctuary state.” Spanberger’s supporters countered that they would cooperate fully with federal law enforcement in any criminal matters regarding illegal immigration.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin described the incident, noting that two illegal immigrants were caught on Interstate 295 near the Chickahominy River Bridge after firing weapons. This action, McLaughlin stated, showed a “complete disregard for the safety of Virginians.”

According to her, the teenagers were released “without review” under what she refers to as the Biden administration’s lenient immigration policies. After being apprehended by state authorities, they were transferred to a juvenile detention facility in Williamsburg, Virginia.

“We will not allow criminal illegal aliens to terrorize the American people,” McLaughlin asserted.

The two 17-year-old undocumented immigrants from Honduras allegedly stole a BMW and took off on the interstate, leading to a police chase initiated by a sheriff’s deputy. Officers recognized the vehicle description from a report, prompting the pursuit.

Ultimately, according to DHS, the chase ended when the car crashed on Mechanicsville Turnpike, possibly avoiding a more populated area in downtown Richmond.

Following their arrest, the teenagers faced multiple charges, including shooting from a vehicle and other firearm-related offenses, as reported by DHS.

Virginia State Police praised the swift arrest, attributing it to effective cooperation among various local authorities.

Interstate 295 serves as a significant alternative route to Interstate 95, facilitating travel through Richmond and connecting areas toward North Carolina and Washington, D.C.
