Improve the airport experience for families: Trump administration starts $1B initiative

New Initiative to Enhance Family Travel Experience at Airports

The Departments of Transportation and Health and Human Services are collaborating to kick off an initiative aimed at making air travel more family-friendly by enhancing resources and food options in U.S. airports.

During a press conference at Reagan National Airport on Monday, Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. introduced the Family Travel Campaign. This campaign plans to allocate $1 billion in grants to airports to improve the travel experience for families.

“I would say this is where healthy eating gets lost,” remarked Kennedy, emphasizing the need for better food options.

Duffy outlined several potential uses for the funds, which might include children’s play areas, nursing pods, training spaces, and separate security lanes for families. He expressed an openness to other improvement proposals that airports might suggest.

“There’s a wealth of information regarding what kinds of subsidies airports can pursue,” Duffy added.

In the spirit of the campaign, both officials are pushing for healthier food choices at airports across the nation.

Kennedy shared his perspective, mentioning that after spending a significant amount of time in airports over the years, he has often noticed the prevalence of unhealthy food options such as fried foods and sugary snacks that leave travelers feeling worse than before eating.

At the event, Farmer’s Fridge was highlighted as a company that offers healthier vending machine options, including salads and sandwiches. CEO Luke Saunders noted that the company has been in operation for 12 years and now has machines in over 30 airports in the U.S.

“If you’d like to support this initiative, I encourage you to reach out to airport authorities,” Duffy suggested.

Additionally, Duffy mentioned the recent hiring of an integrator to assist in modernizing air travel technology, transitioning it from analog to digital formats.

In November, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that new security screening lanes would be introduced for families with young children, as well as for veterans and active-duty military personnel.
