Paul Pelosi’s Court Proceedings Update
The legal situation involving 86-year-old Paul Pelosi took an interesting turn in Napa County Superior Court when he opted not to attend his arraignment in person.
Facing a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge along with an infraction for making an unlawful turn, Pelosi, who is married to former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, decided to have prominent defense attorney Amanda Bevins represent him in court instead.
This choice was made based on California Penal Code Section 977, which allows defendants charged only with misdemeanors to have their private defense counsel attend court without requiring their physical presence—unless specified exceptions apply, or the court demands the defendant be there personally.
The case stems from a collision that occurred on July 3rd on Yount Street in Yountville. Authorities report that Pelosi’s 2025 Maserati GranCabrio convertible struck a legally parked Tesla, causing significant damage to the parked vehicle.
According to court documents from the Napa County District Attorney’s Office, Pelosi left the scene quickly without attempting to contact the car’s owner or provide any insurance information. However, deputies found him about half a mile away after his sports car broke down.
Pelosi reportedly admitted to investigators that he was aware of hitting something but claimed he intended to return to leave his contact details. This explanation was given only after he had fled the scene and driven until his damaged car stalled.
In response to the public’s interest and the court filings, the Napa County District Attorney’s Office released a statement indicating that chemical testing showed no evidence of impairment at the time of the incident, ruling out any driving-under-the-influence (DUI) charges.
Prosecutors explained that they were limited to filing charges that they could prove beyond a reasonable doubt, ultimately leading to the misdemeanor hit-and-run and a traffic violation. Local authorities have also requested the California DMV to re-evaluate Pelosi’s driving capability, which is a standard practice following serious accidents involving older drivers.
Pelosi’s approach of using a high-profile lawyer for legal matters is reminiscent of a similar case he faced in 2022 in Napa County. During that situation, Bevins represented him as well, leading to a guilty plea for a misdemeanor DUI charge from a two-car collision that resulted in injuries.
Family representatives for Pelosi have stated that he expressed his apologies directly to the owner of the damaged vehicle and has taken full financial responsibility for the repair expenses. Meanwhile, prosecutors have indicated that body camera footage and investigation files will remain restricted to maintain procedural fairness while defense motions proceed.
