McGee told police the murder happened on March 22, 2022, she said. Gelser was reported missing in August 2023, so police initially believed the murders occurred between August and September 2023.

After Gelser fell asleep on the couple’s couch, McGee grabbed a knife and stabbed him in the back, leading to a scuffle. McGee then stabbed Gelser multiple times and hit him with a hammer. Before his death, Gelser reportedly begged McGee to tell her why she had killed him. McGee told Gelser, “I’ve had enough,” and while he was killing Gelser, she dug through the dying man’s pockets and removed the drugs he had earlier been denied.
Stein told police he was home but not involved in any crime.

The couple left the dismembered body in their apartment for several days until it showed signs of decomposition. Then they used a small saw to cut Gelser’s body. The couple placed the body parts in plastic bags and placed them in a suitcase that McGee stuck in the refrigerator. Police said they considered throwing the body, but decided it would be too much trouble with other people in the crowded building.
Gelser’s body was discovered Monday when police searched his home. They found a severed head and other body parts on the ice.
Stines was charged with concealing a corpse after undergoing a psychiatric evaluation, the newspaper reported. Meanwhile, McGee is expected to be charged with murder within the next few days.
