India’s Parliamentary Delegation Visits South Korea
A parliamentary delegation from India has traveled to South Korea to discuss the country’s stance on terrorism following a recent military campaign. They conveyed a clear message to a senior South Korean official, stating, “We cannot distinguish between terrorists and their sponsors.”
The delegation reiterated its commitment to a “new normal” of decisive retaliation concerning terrorism. According to the Indian embassy’s statement on X, they emphasized that there is no separation between terrorists and their backers.
Leading the delegation, Sanjay Kumar Jha, a Rajya Sabha MP from JD (U), engaged in meaningful discussions with various prominent South Korean officials, including Dr. Yoon Yon Young-Kwan, a former vice-chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
The South Korean representatives expressed strong opposition to terrorism and showed an understanding of India’s perspective. Attendees included Major Shin Sang-gin, a former counterterrorism center leader, as well as previous ambassadors to India.
This delegation is one of seven multi-party teams from India, tasked with reaching out to global capitals to highlight Pakistan’s role in terrorism and India’s response. TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee noted the shared cultural ties between India and South Korea, particularly through Rabindranath Tagore.
Banerjee emphasized their united front against terrorism, saying, “Together, we will reaffirm common values of peace, resilience, and justice in the face of global threats.” Earlier, the delegation also met members of the Indian diaspora in Korea. They arrived in the capital over the weekend.
A representative from India elaborated on how Pakistan coordinated the violent attacks in Pahargam on April 22, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives. They discussed targeted actions that India took, underscoring a responsible approach in their military response.
The delegation praised the Indian diaspora for upholding principles of unity and tolerance against terrorism, reinforcing the nation’s determination to fight all forms of it.
Prior to their meetings, Ambassador Amit Kumar briefed the delegation, stressing the importance of a strong message condemning terrorism. Jha later stated that their discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation.
Expressing his sentiments, Jha noted, “I am honored to be here, working to strengthen counterterrorism efforts between India and North and South Korea.” The visit aims to further India’s resolute stance against terrorism.
In addition to Jha, the delegation includes several MPs, along with notable former officials. They had previously visited Japan, receiving strong support for India’s position on terrorism.
Following the tragic Pahargam attack, tensions with Pakistan have increased. India conducted a precise strike against terror infrastructure on May 7, which was a direct response to the threats faced.
The military hostilities have since de-escalated, with a halt to aggressive actions occurring after discussions between military leaders.
