Truck Driver Language Requirement Discussion

Shannon Everett, a co-founder of American Truckers United, mentioned during a recent segment that, under Trump’s administration, there appears to be an increased expectation for truck drivers to speak English.

Host Mike Slater brought up a recently shared video featuring a Mexican truck driver who was sleeping on the roadside. He expressed concern about the situation: “It seems unacceptable. He’s dozing off, and if he doesn’t speak English, how has this been overlooked for so long? Are we seeing more drivers stopped and questioned about their language skills?”

Everett responded, indicating that enforcement is indeed on the rise, but he believes it still falls short. “Ultimately, I think the police want to do the right thing,” he noted. He pointed out, however, that the American Trucking Associations, which typically represents the industry’s interests, hasn’t actively engaged in this important conversation.

“These leaders in the field should really question why there are so many drivers here and why authorities aren’t addressing it,” Everett added. He emphasized that their motivation for establishing American Truckers United was to ensure that they had a voice in these discussions.

He also speculated that some industry leaders have held back on discussing immigration issues due to fear. “There’s been an effort to silence this conversation, making it necessary for us to create our own group to tackle these problems,” he continued, mentioning that it’s been a long-standing issue, and recent shifts under Trump are prompting the industry to adapt with new regulations.

“It’s almost like there’s a standstill as they figure out their next steps. I’ve certainly noticed that,” he said, but remained hopeful that action was on the horizon.
