Increasing Criticism as Police Chief Faces Discrimination Lawsuit

Cincinnati Police Chief Under Scrutiny Following Violent Brawl

Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Tegge is facing scrutiny after a brawl broke out in downtown Cincinnati on July 25, raising concerns over workplace discrimination. The incident drew significant attention when video footage circulated online, depicting troubling violent behavior during the chaos.

As reported, a lawsuit was filed in May by several officers who allege discrimination in promotions and responsibilities. They claim that Chief Tegge favored minorities and women in her decision-making process.

Allegations suggest that Tegge was actively involved in assigning duties and implemented a “racial-based quota system” for promoting certain groups. The lawsuit highlights that in 2023, a considerable portion of minority and female officers received “priority appointments,” while a smaller percentage of white officers were promoted.

Meanwhile, police are still looking into the violent altercation, which involved both Black and white individuals. They’ve faced criticism for what some perceive as a slow response in making arrests after the incident.

Three suspects have reportedly been arrested following the brawl, and the Fraternal Order of Police Queen City Lodge #69 expressed gratitude for the arrests made by law enforcement.

In her defense, Chief Tegge stated that the video footage lacked crucial context and accused social media platforms and mainstream media outlets of failing to accurately convey the incident. “I think the irresponsibility with social media is that it just shows one side of the equation very often, without context and without any real nuance,” she commented.

In the aftermath, some members of Cincinnati’s Democratic city council faced backlash for their comments on the victims of the brawl. One council member, Victoria Parks, controversially stated that the victims “begged for that assault,” which caused further unrest online.

Chief Tegge mentioned plans to release additional footage to provide more insight into what transpired during the brawl, emphasizing the need for ongoing investigation into the issue.
