Struggles of Freedom in a Challenging Season

Nowadays, it’s a bit confusing to figure out what to do with freedom.

The team has only been at full strength for two games, with a total of 11 different starting lineups and a couple of midseason trades.

As they approach Sunday, Freedom is facing their longest losing streak since 2022.

On Friday, they suffered a 16-point defeat to The Sun, the team at the bottom of the league standings, marking their fourth consecutive loss.

The defending champions, who kicked off the season with an impressive nine-game winning streak, are now feeling the pressure.

With six games crammed into 10 days, Freedom is dealing with fatigue and a string of injuries.

It’s not unusual for teams to face injuries during a season, but the sheer number of absences for Liberty players is striking.

Jonquel Jones just returned after missing a month due to an ankle injury, while Sabrina Ionescu, Natasha Cloud, and Leonie Fiebich have also been sidelined at times.

Currently, Freedom is missing Breanna Stewart, Kennedy Burke, and Nyara Sabally.

Marine Johanne stands out as the only player to have participated in all 27 games this season.

The team’s schedule is particularly tough this month, with 14 games in August, including eight away games.

There’s hardly any opportunity for practice or rest. Compounding these challenges are the two new players in the lineup, making things even more complicated.

Stephanie Talbot’s adjustment has been rocky—she’s had more turnovers than assists. Still, at least she’s making an effort to contribute more than some others on the team.

On a hopeful note, Emma Meesman may debut for the team this Sunday in Connecticut.

There’s optimism that her basketball IQ and playing style will mesh well with her teammates, easing her transition onto a team that really needs a boost.

Despite a rough patch, with an 8-10 record in the last eight weeks, Liberty (17-10) still sits second in the league standings—though Dream and Mercury are closing in.

After Friday’s loss, the atmosphere in the team was unexpectedly calm.

They reflected on their past successes and the challenge of matching The Sun’s physical play. Ionescu defended the team’s efforts, suggesting that a 16-point loss to the league’s worst wasn’t alarming.

“Everyone is doing their best,” she noted.

The team is understandably weary from having to pick up the slack due to their circumstances, but they know better than to expect sympathy.

As they look to wrap up this tough road trip on a positive note, hope is still alive.
