Pete Stauber, a former police officer and incumbent Republican member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, defeated a Republican challenger on Tuesday night, advancing to November’s general election and set to face off against the winner of Tuesday night’s Minnesota 8th District Democratic Primary.
Stauber, who has served in the House since January 2019, is known for his background in law enforcement and focus on public safety.
Before entering politics, Stauber worked as a police officer in Duluth, Minnesota. His experience in law enforcement has influenced his legislative priorities, including strengthening border security and supporting law enforcement. Local 49 of the International Union of Operating Engineers endorsed Stauber last month.

Challenger Harry Welty is originally from Arkansas City, Kansas, but currently lives in Duluth, Minnesota, where he works in education. He earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of Minnesota at Mankato in 1973.
Welty became politically active while serving on the Duluth School Board from 1996 to 2004. During her time on the board, she gained national attention for using a Voodoo doll to symbolize attempts to resolve conflicts among board members.
