Independent filmmaker reveals Hollywood's grip on America's cultural expression

Filmmaker Alex Lee Moyer Shifts Perspectives

Alex Lee Moyer is a filmmaker, director, and editor who stands out in the industry, largely because she doesn’t conform to the Hollywood narrative.

Her unique approach is all about tackling untold stories. Take “TFW No GF” (2020), for instance. It’s an exploration of the isolation that young men—think Incels and Frogs—experience in digital subcultures. Then there’s “The War of Alex” (2022), which delves into the controversial figure, Alex Jones.

However, neither of these films is designed to sway an audience in any specific direction.

“I’m not making a propaganda film. I just want to explore the core issues… many people, including myself, deal with anxiety,” she mentioned during a recent chat with Nicole Shanahan on “Back to the People.”

Moyer doesn’t aim to classify individuals like Alex Jones as simply “good” or “bad.” She emphasizes, “He is a person, and that’s what matters. Some controversial topics can actually foster dialogue among people,” she argues.

Interestingly, Moyer’s commitment to factual storytelling was once viewed as a “liberal cause,” but that perception shifted post-Covid-19. Now, amidst today’s hypercharged political climate, her work faces misinterpretation, inaccurately labeled as “right-wing.”

“The Hollywood narrative has become so narrow that if you’re outside that bubble, you’re seen as unworthy or unethical,” Nicole pointed out.

The prevalence of films driven by leftist agendas can often be traced back to the filters that industry executives apply. “A project has to navigate through numerous hurdles to get made,” Moyer explains.

“Hollywood doesn’t take risks anymore, especially with threats from AI and the need to appease international markets, like China, while avoiding any deviation from its liberal principles,” she noted.

While many may wish for Hollywood’s downfall, Moyer and Nicole believe the industry retains a vital role in shaping societal narratives.

“It’s a significant source of soft power for the U.S. We should care about what’s happening in Hollywood as it helps define our identity both here and globally,” Moyer asserted.

Nicole echoed this sentiment, stating, “Hollywood’s disconnect from American culture and ideals is concerning.”

Instead of waiting for a Hollywood transformation, Moyer has taken proactive steps. In late 2023, she established her own production company, Onset Creative.

The aim? “First and foremost, we’re focused on developing projects that reflect the present and near past—projects that don’t fit the traditional mold.”

For insights into Moyer’s forthcoming documentary, “The Technologists,” which offers an unflinching look at the fast-advancing world of artificial intelligence and its effects on culture, be sure to check out the full interview.
