According to police and her family, the 101-year-old Hasid’s family head, who fled Russia after World War II, was fatally struck by saying that he was “very independent until her last day.”
Taibel Brod was walking home from his birthday party for Rebel around 8:25pm on April 8th. A 65-year-old man behind the wheels of a 2023 GMC Yukon SUV ploughed her as he crossed the corner of Brooklyn Avenue and Montgomery Street in Crown Heights.
Brod was rushed to the Maimonides Medical Center, initially listed in stable condition, but succumbed to the injury less than two weeks later on Sunday, police said.
According to her loved ones, Brod left five children, three sons, two daughters, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She met her husband, Lev Chatsquel Brod.
According to Brod’s parents, they married there and had two daughters before moving to the United States in 1951.
The growing Chabad family lived in Brownsville before moving to Crown Heights in the mid-1950s.
Brod lived alone after her husband passed away 20 years ago.
On Thursday afternoon, her Crown Heights home was filled with sad families sitting in Shiva, a 7-day Jewish mourning ritual.

His son, Joseph Brod, 73, who works as a Los Angeles architecture engineer, said his mother spent decades feeding patients at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center.
“For over 50 years, she will feed her patients,” Joseph said. “Over 50 years every day.”
Joseph said his mother “was very active in the community” “doing goodness and kindness for her.”
Another son reflected his feelings.
“My mother was a volunteer in many areas and was deeply committed to the community. She prayed a lot on a daily basis,” added Israeli son, 69. “Very open houses and visitors will come from other countries to be in this community. She welcomes them on weekends and holidays. She was a very gifted person.”
Police say great grandmother was walking alone when driver Menachem Shagaraw turned left onto Montgomery Street and attacked her on a crosswalk.

Shagalow was arrested at the scene and charged with aggravated licensed operator, failed to exercise in proper care and driving without a license in a motor vehicle, officers said.

Officers said Shagarow had only one previous arrest for the 1998 grand theft.
The family refused to talk about the driver, and Elder Israel simply said, “It was an accident.”
Joseph said he would have the opportunity to visit his mother at the hospital on Thursday and Friday, a few days before her death.
“Sometimes, she opened her eyes,” he said. “I felt that she recognized me. The day she passed away, my brother and two sisters walked from Brooklyn to the hospital, and she was smiling at them. That was before she passed away.”
He said he grieved his mother’s death and turned his eyes to his faith.
“I don’t know the mystery of God, how he wants the world,” Joseph said. “We are taught that everything that happens in the world is called God’s providence.”
