India Decides to Halt Russian Oil Purchases and Engage in Trade Agreement with the U.S.

U.S. and India Reach Trade Agreement

President Donald Trump announced on Monday that a trade deal has been finalized between the United States and India, with India agreeing to cease purchasing Russian crude oil.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared that he spoke earlier that day with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom he referred to as one of his “greatest friends.”

“We discussed various topics, trade being one of them, as well as efforts to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The Prime Minister has agreed to stop buying Russian oil and will increase purchases from the United States and possibly Venezuela,” Trump stated.

He added, “This will help to conclude the ongoing war in Ukraine, where countless lives are being lost every week!”

The president also provided insights into the specifics of the trade agreement with India.

“Out of friendship and respect for Prime Minister Modi, we have reached this trade agreement, effective immediately. The U.S. will reduce reciprocal tariffs from 25 percent to 18 percent. Additionally, we will work on eliminating tariffs and non-tariff barriers. The Prime Minister committed to increasing purchases of American products significantly, including more than $500 billion in energy, technology, agriculture, and coal. Our strong relationship with India is only set to grow. Prime Minister Modi and I are both doers, unlike many others. Thank you for considering this.”

After their discussion, Prime Minister Modi expressed his support for Trump, thanking the president on behalf of India’s 1.4 billion citizens.

“When two major economies and the world’s largest democracy unite, it benefits our people and creates significant opportunities for cooperation,” Modi remarked.

He emphasized, “President Trump’s leadership is vital for global peace, stability, and prosperity. India fully backs his peace initiatives.” Modi concluded by expressing eagerness to work closely with Trump to elevate their partnership to new heights.
