Michigan Wolverines Fall Short in Overtime Against Indiana

It’s been a tough few seasons for the Wolverines since their last College Football Playoff national championship win. Saturday’s game only added to that sorrow as Michigan faced a disheartening 13-6 overtime loss to the defending champions, Indiana. In a situation where a touchdown was crucial, the Wolverines couldn’t find the end zone.

Indiana’s quarterback, Josh Hoover, managed to secure a 4-yard touchdown run during overtime. Subsequently, Michigan’s offense faltered under pressure, and the Hoosiers’ defense held strong to clinch the win. This victory also spared Indiana from experiencing back-to-back losses for the first time in three years under Coach Curt Cignetti and marked their first win at Michigan Stadium since 1967.

In this matchup, freshman quarterback Tommy Carr took the lead for the Wolverines, stepping in as Bryce Underwood sat out. Unfortunately, Carr’s performance was not up to par compared to his previous game against Penn State. He had a tough time, fumbling the ball on a risky pitch in the first quarter and throwing an interception later on. His struggles continued as he took multiple sacks, which culminated in missed field goal opportunities, one after Michigan advanced to the Indiana 1-yard line.

Things were looking a bit grim for Michigan as they reached the Hoosiers’ 3-yard line in the final minute of regulation, but Carr was sacked again. This led them to settle for a 26-yard field goal as time ran out.

Although Hoover initially faced challenges as well, he eventually completed a critical 21-yard pass to Brock Schott on the first play of overtime that set up his own touchdown run. Carr’s overall stats showed 167 passing yards along with an interception and a fumble. Notably, his brother, CJ Carr, who is a quarterback at Notre Dame, was present at the game since his team had a bye week.

As for what’s next, Indiana will head home to face Minnesota in their upcoming game, while Michigan will attempt to bounce back against Rutgers.
