Indiana Names New Quarterback
Indiana has secured a new quarterback to replace Fernando Mendoza.
Josh Hoover, a former TCU quarterback, has committed to join the Hoosiers and is expected to take the starting role next season. Mendoza, on the other hand, is anticipated to declare for the NFL Draft, likely as the top pick.
While there has been no formal announcement, Hoover took to Instagram to share reports from CBS Sports and On3 regarding his decision.
In December, he announced his entry into the transfer portal after four seasons at TCU, where he was set to be the starting quarterback for 2023.
“First, I want to express my gratitude to God for the chance to play in this game,” Hoover said in a statement back then. “It’s been a privilege to represent TCU for four amazing years. Graduating from this university was a dream come true, and I’ll always cherish that experience.”
He also thanked his coach, Sonny Dykes, for the opportunity to play at TCU, along with coach Kendal Briles and the coaching staff for pushing him to excel both in and out of the game. He reflected on the friendships he made, saying, “Some of my best friends are from this place. I’m truly thankful for that.”
“After much contemplation and prayer, I’ve chosen to enter the transfer portal. Thank you, TCU, and God bless.”
During his time at TCU, Hoover racked up impressive stats, throwing for 9,629 yards and 71 touchdowns, including 16 games with over 300 yards and three games exceeding 400 yards.
He set a TCU record with 3,949 passing yards in 2024 and added 3,472 yards and 29 touchdowns last season.
The Horned Frogs finished their last season with a record of 7-4.
Mendoza, who recently won the Heisman Trophy with Indiana, is having a standout season that could lead the team to the national championship game for the first time in history. They are just one win away, set to face Oregon State in the College Football Playoff semifinals on January 9.
