Indiana GOP senator criticized for sharing AI images of himself hitting Santa — then labels critics as 'snowflakes'

Indiana Senator’s AI Christmas Post Sparks Outrage

An Indiana senator has ignited a social media storm after sharing an AI-generated image. The depiction shows Santa Claus attacking another Santa with a crowd cheering them on, which he used to mock critics who expressed their disapproval, calling them “snowflakes.”

Senator Chris Garten, a Republican serving his second term, shared four fabricated images on his official X account. One of them featured him in a sleeveless suit, delivering punches and kicks to a frightened Santa on the steps of the Indiana State Capitol while supporters waved “Gardens for Indiana” signs.

Another image displayed Garten in a Santa suit and sunglasses, triumphantly riding a reindeer and showcasing his exaggerated muscles.

“When I learn that the North Pole is trying to shove yet more bureaucratic overreach and unfunded mandates down the chimney under the guise of ‘Christmas cheer.’ Not on my watch,” Garten wrote in his post, which was somewhat unusual for the holiday.

He added, “We, the People, not the Bureaucrats, run Indiana. Give it back to the North Pole Big Guy. Merry Christmas, Hoosiers!”

Critics didn’t hold back, condemning the portrayal of Kris Kringle as violent. Some labeled it shameful, questioning why anyone would post such an image of a beloved figure. One comment noted, “What compels someone to post an image of themselves punching someone who is loved all over the world?”

Others expressed similar sentiments, saying the post was a heartless twist on a Christmas symbol. A critic remarked that it was “the most pathetic thing I’ve seen this Christmas,” while the Indiana Democratic Party found the post “pretty weird” and criticized the state’s Republicans more broadly.

In response to the backlash, Garten defended his post, referring to it as “intolerable.” He mentioned that the AI images were created in a playful spirit with his kids, implying the reactions were unwarranted. “The few AI photos we had fun designing with the kids showed a lot of intolerance, abuse, and anger,” he stated in a follow-up post.

He further declared, “Some of you clowns are intolerable. I hope your negativity stays in the comments and not directed at your family. Merry Christmas, snowflakes.” He also included another AI-generated image of himself in a Santa suit, grinning and pointing at a snowflake.

Garten, who became a senator in 2018, expressed confusion over why his “humorous” take had generated so much attention. “With everything going on in the world, I find it difficult to understand why my clearly humorous post is considered news,” he remarked.

He finished by pointing out the online outrage as an indication of how sensitive society has become, suggesting that perhaps some self-reflection was necessary.

Garten did not immediately reply to a request for further comment.
