After growing up alongside Miami Hurricanes star Mark Fletcher Jr., Indiana cornerback D’Angelo Pons was taken aback when the two found themselves in a heated moment on the field. On Monday night, the Hoosiers made history, going 16-0 for the first time since 1894 by defeating the Hurricanes. The game-winning interception was made by Pons’ teammate Jamari Sharp, another familiar face from their Miami childhood.
Post-game, an ESPN broadcast caught Fletcher, who had scored two touchdowns despite the 27-21 loss, throwing a punch at Indiana’s Tyrick Tucker. The excitement of the Hoosiers’ victory turned tense when Fletcher’s teammates and staff intervened to separate him from the situation.
Pons, present at a celebratory event at Raising Canes in Bloomington alongside Sharpe and receiver Elijah Surratt, expressed his surprise about the incident with Fletcher and Tucker. “The guys who worked that hard are the guys I knew as kids,” he reflected on Fletcher’s actions, noting how unexpected this was from someone he regarded as a class act.
He added, “I don’t know all the details, but I was definitely shocked.” Pons noted that Fletcher has always been one of the leaders on the team, and this incident seemed out of character for him.
Tucker, on his end, claimed he was trying to congratulate Fletcher on his performance but got pulled into the altercation instead. He dismissed any suggestions that he spoke ill of Fletcher’s late father, countering the narrative suggested by Miami’s recruiting director.
In more lighthearted moments, Pons shared that he intends to enter the 2026 NFL Draft. He mentioned that while they haven’t officially announced it, plans are in motion. Draft experts predict he might be selected in the second day of the draft, something he seems cautiously optimistic about.
