An Indiana woman has been charged with child neglect after her 5-year-old stepdaughter was found dead in a river, authorities said.

Deonna Hollingsworth, 26, was charged in connection with the child’s death.

Knox County authorities received a 911 call around 2:40 p.m. Thursday, in which the caller reported that a child had gone missing while playing in the Wabash River at Kimmel Park in Vincennes, Indiana, according to WFIE.

Multiple agencies rushed to the river and used boats, sonar and dive teams to search for the girl, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

The girl’s body was discovered by divers near the park’s boat launch at about 7:15 p.m.

The child was in the care of his stepmother, Ms Hollingsworth, when he went missing in the river.

“We felt there was sufficient evidence to show that a child was in her custody at the time and was placed in a situation that put her life and health at risk,” Department of Natural Resources Director Joe Haywood said.

The incident remains under investigation.
