An Indianapolis homeowner says he thwarted a home invasion attempt, stole the suspect's gun and shot him. It was like an action sequence straight out of a movie.
Just before 7 p.m. Tuesday, a masked man entered Brent Smith's home and struck him in the head with a firearm during an attempted robbery, but Smith fought back and struck both men during the struggle. I threw him into the glass table.
“It was like a movie, me and him fighting over the gun.” Smith told FOX 59 Indianapolis.
Smith admitted to shooting the intruder, Damon Swanigan Jr., with the suspect's own gun during the struggle.
After shooting the would-be robber, Smith heard what sounded like “thousands of gunshots” outside his home.
“When the gun went off, I heard thousands of gunshots,” Smith said. “It was a lot of gunshots, man, a lot of gunshots.”
Smith said he engaged in a shootout with other suspects who were waiting outside, using both the suspect's gun and his own. The onslaught damaged the siding and front door of Smith's home and shattered the windows of a car parked on the street.
“I didn't even think about them or me. I was basically just trying to survive myself,” Smith added.
Because the law allows people to protect themselves and their homes with deadly force, Smith was detained and questioned by police overnight before being released.
The next morning, Smith became emotional thinking about what had happened and told the media that she had never intended to kill anyone.
“That doesn't make sense, dude. I didn't want to do that,” Smith said. “I don't know what his intentions were, but I didn't want to get shot. That's all I needed.”
Police are seeking information regarding a suspect who fled the scene.
Their investigation is ongoing.
