Indianapolis officer fatally shoots suspect in armed carjacking

An Indianapolis police officer shot and killed a suspect in an armed carjacking on Tuesday after the suspect dropped something and reached out to pick it up while fleeing on foot, Indianapolis police said.

Indianapolis Police Department officers were dispatched to the city’s east side on a report of a carjacking just before 9 a.m. The female victim told officers a suspect approached her vehicle at gunpoint and demanded the vehicle and other items.

She told police the other suspects remained in the vehicle while the carjacking took place, after which all of the suspects fled in her vehicle and theirs.

A description of both vehicles was broadcast to officers, after which one of the officers spotted the two vehicles, encountered a male suspect and ordered him to “get on the ground,” police said in a statement.

Police said the suspect began running toward the suspect’s gray sedan as officers ordered him to “drop the gun.”

An Indianapolis police officer has reportedly shot and killed an armed carjacking suspect.

As the suspect approached the sedan, officers opened fire after he “dropped something and attempted to pick it up,” police said. Officers fired three times, hitting the suspect at least once.

Police Chief Chris Bailey said the suspect was pronounced dead at a hospital and that the other suspect fled the scene in a sedan. At an afternoon press conference, he said the suspect “dropped something,” but it was unclear whether he dropped a gun or something else.

“My heart goes out to everyone involved in this incident. This is something that should never have happened,” Bailey said.

Bailey said officers found two firearms near the suspect. He said the officer who fired his gun was equipped with a body-worn camera that was activated at the time.
