Individual FIFA official decided to overturn Folarin Balogun's World Cup red card suspension.

Controversy Surrounds Balogun’s Suspension After World Cup Exit

Even with the United States out of the World Cup, the repercussions from FIFA’s choice to suspend Folarin Balogun are still being discussed as new insights about the decision-making process come to light.

The chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Mohammad Al Kamali from the UAE, made the decision alone, without input from the other 17 committee members, as reported.

This revelation is only likely to intensify criticism surrounding the suspension and spark more inquiries into the reasoning behind it.

Balogun, regarded as one of the standout players for the U.S. men’s national team, struggled to leave his mark during the team’s disappointing 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16.

The U.S. player received a red card in the earlier match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, leading to an automatic ban for the subsequent game.

Kamali issued Balogun a one-match suspension, alongside a suspended one-year sentence, but permitted him to play in the quarter-final against Belgium.

The FIFA Disciplinary Commissioner did not respond to questions when approached by the media over the weekend, appearing to avoid interaction.

FIFA has yet to address the new findings reported.

The choice to lift the automatic one-match ban has stirred reactions from fans and officials in other countries, heightened by President Donald Trump’s statement that he had reached out to FIFA president Gianni Infantino regarding the initial red card.

Trump mentioned that he asked Infantino to take a second look at the card but assured that he didn’t dictate a specific course of action.

Infantino acknowledged discussing World Cup matters with the U.S. President, stating that he receives similar calls from various global leaders and officials, emphasizing that legal processes within FIFA’s independent judiciary are ongoing and will determine the outcome.

This situation has drawn criticism and raised ethical questions about Trump’s potential influence over the decision.
