Shooting at Brown University: Dignitary Detained
A person of interest has been apprehended in relation to the shooting incident that occurred on Saturday at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Reports indicate that two students were killed and nine others injured during the attack, which took place amid final exams.
Despite the arrest, significant questions remain unanswered following the tragedy. Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez stated that those in custody are in their 20s, and as of now, no charges have been filed. Initially, he indicated that the suspect was in his 30s and confirmed that no additional suspects are being sought at this time.
According to the police, a man dressed in black was identified as the shooter. Surveillance footage released late Saturday night showed someone of interest leaving the scene of the shooting.
The individuals in custody were found at a Hampton Inn Hotel in Coventry, approximately 32 miles from Providence. Law enforcement, including the FBI, maintained a presence at the hotel Sunday, sealing off sections as part of the ongoing investigation.
University President Christina Paxson reported to the press that one of those injured has since been discharged from the hospital, while seven others remain in critical but stable condition. One student is listed as critically injured.
Investigators are still looking into how the gunman gained access to the first-floor classroom of the Barth and Holly building, which houses the engineering and physics departments. The building’s exterior door was reportedly unlocked, but the specific room used for the exam required badge access.
Officials mentioned that the assailant opened fire inside a classroom with a 9mm handgun, discharging more than 40 rounds. While authorities have not recovered any firearms, they did find two loaded 30-round magazines.
In the wake of the shooting, Brown University has canceled all remaining classes and exams for the semester, allowing students the option to leave campus.
Paxson expressed her heartfelt sympathy for the students affected, saying they are remarkable individuals who support one another. She highlighted the community’s strength as they work through this tragic event.
The situation remains fluid, and updates may follow.
