Israeli Gymnasts Cleared for Indonesia World Championships Despite Entry Issues

Last month, the Israel Gymnastics Federation (IGF) announced that its national security team approved the participation of its athletes in the World Gymnastics Championships in Indonesia. This decision came despite the Indonesian government initially blocking their entry due to security concerns.

An IGF representative confirmed that the athletes received clearance from Israeli security officials. “We have permission from the Israeli authorities to participate, as long as all necessary security measures are implemented,” the spokesperson stated. They mentioned that preparations, including visa arrangements, were finalized well in advance.

Eyal Indig, an Israeli male gymnast, noted that the security team allowed him and his teammates entry into the country. He referred to the safety protocols the Israeli sports teams have had in place since the 1972 Munich Olympics, where there was an infamous incident involving terrorists invading the Olympic Village.

Indig remarked, “It felt odd. That security guard cleared everything for us in Indonesia just a week before our departure. We had full clearance from the Israeli security team, and trust me, they don’t take any chances. They kept assuring us it was safe.” He later labeled Indonesia’s denial as a “blatant case of discrimination based on nationality.”

In response to inquiries, the Indonesian Embassy in the U.S. declined to comment further. Indonesia’s Sports Minister, Eric Tohir, had previously defended the country’s stance, highlighting the need to uphold security and public order during international events.

As the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, Indonesia has been a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause. This context fueled domestic opposition against the participation of the Israeli team. Notably, Indonesia lost the opportunity to host the U-20 World Cup after its governor refused to accommodate the Israeli national team.

IGF responded to the Indonesian government’s decision by expressing outrage. Their statement condemned the ban on the Israeli national gymnastics team, stating it undermines the principles of fair competition, and that it could lead to the exclusion of athletes based on political or religious affiliations.

“Behind these words are dedicated athletes who deserve equal opportunities to demonstrate their skills,” the statement read.

In light of the situation, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) seems to have implicitly accepted Indonesia’s exclusion of the Israeli athletes, aligning with the Indonesian government’s recognition. Nevertheless, IGF and the Israeli Olympic Committee have called on the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for a resolution that ensures such occurrences are prevented in the future.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) also reacted by advising against hosting international events in Indonesia after the denial of the Israeli delegation. They noted ongoing discussions regarding potential future Olympic Games in the country would be cut short following this incident.
