Indonesian Diplomat Assassinated in Peru

Zetro Leonardo Pava, a 40-year-old Indonesian diplomat based in Peru, was shot dead outside his apartment in Lima on Monday evening.

Purba had moved to Peru earlier this year and lived in the Rinse district with his wife and their two young children. Reports indicate he was attacked while riding his bike near his residence.

Video footage from security cameras shows a man waiting outside the building just before the shooting, which occurred right before Purba entered his home. The assault was witnessed by two bystanders, and his wife was unharmed, though she is currently under police protection.

Peruvian Home Minister Carlos Malabar commented on the incident, describing it as resembling a contract killing. He noted that this marks the first such incident in the Lince district this year, and the motives remain unclear.

“We cannot dismiss the possibility that this is linked to personal conflicts,” he stated. Investigators are looking into the identity of the attackers, who, according to initial assessments, appear to be foreigners.

The police have not ruled out any theories concerning the assassination, especially considering the nature of the crime. A source hinted that the motive might stem from issues in Indonesia that extended to Peru.

A close friend and colleague of Purba offered insight on a local radio show, insisting he had never heard of any threats against the diplomat. He pointed out that Purba and his family arrived in Lima just a few months ago and did not speak Spanish.

Indonesia’s Foreign Minister, Mainer Lure Negeli, has reached out to his Peruvian counterpart, urging a thorough investigation into the assassination. On social media, he expressed trust in Peru’s commitment to protecting its diplomatic staff and Indonesian citizens.

In a statement, Peru’s Foreign Ministry expressed its condolences regarding the diplomat’s death. They assured that the Indonesian ambassador has requested all necessary measures to support the investigation.

Peru’s Foreign Minister Schialer also weighed in, indicating this incident showcases the urgent issue of public safety in the country. He emphasized that this is a pressing call to action for both officials and citizens to address the growing problem of insecurity.

Interestingly, this assassination occurred just weeks after Peru and Indonesia celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations amidst ongoing anti-corruption protests in Indonesia.
