IndyCar racer David Malukas taken by helicopter to nearby hospital following frightening accident

David Marcus was airlifted to a hospital “for preventive reasons” after a serious crash during the Music City Grand Prix finale on Sunday, which happened on lap 88.

The incident unfolded while he attempted to pass British rookie Louis Foster; as two IndyCar drivers collided, Marcus spun into a wall and hit the rear of his car violently.

He expressed frustration as he listened to his team’s radio communications before being transported to the hospital.

“David is fine. He is awake and alert,” the team reassured. “We sent him to the trauma center for precautionary reasons and advanced imaging.”

Foster received a drive-through penalty due to the crash and showed concern for Marcus afterward.

“I heard he went to the hospital, so I want to make sure he’s okay,” Foster remarked. “I’m glad to hear he’s alright. I’ll reach out to him to check in.”

Despite the incident, Foster didn’t think it was entirely due to the crash. “We were just trying to stay on the lead lap,” he explained. “I found my line but he sort of moved into me. There wasn’t much I could do.”

Marcus had a strong season, finishing second in this year’s Indianapolis 500 and eighth at the Milwaukee Mile last week.

Foster, while showing promise as a candidate for IndyCar’s Rookie of the Year, may see his chances diminished due to the penalty.
