Rising Health Concerns

Whooping cough cases have notably increased in Florida this year. It’s a bit concerning, isn’t it?

HEPA air purifiers might help in reducing the viral load in classrooms, but they don’t necessarily stop transmission. So, it’s a mixed bag.

And in New York State, locally acquired chikungunya has been reported. It seems we can’t take a breather on these infections.

On another note, California’s Los Angeles County is looking into its first locally acquired dengue case of the year from a resident in San Gabriel Valley. This individual fell ill around late September and is recovering, with no recent travel to endemic areas. Last year, Los Angeles saw its first wave of local dengue cases with 14 reported. Health officials in the county indicate that widespread transmission risk remains low.

Meanwhile, South Carolina is experiencing a surge in measles cases. It feels like the “eradicated” status some regions have enjoyed might slip away with these rising numbers.

China has also reported two new human cases of H9N2 avian flu, bringing the total to 21 cases in six months. It’s definitely something to keep an eye on.

Dozens of new avian flu cases have been documented in wild birds globally.

In Cambodia, they reported their 16th H5N1 avian flu case of the year, which is the first since early August. A three-year-old girl from Kampong Speu province is in intensive care after showing symptoms around the same time chickens and ducks in her area fell ill. This case involves a strain of H5N1 that has been in Cambodia since 2014, mixed with a more recent global strain. It’s unsettling.

Turning to mpox, California has now reported its first locally acquired case of Clade 1, which is different since previous cases were all travel-related. Now, there are three total cases reported.

On a positive note, the last case from the Ebola outbreak in the DRC is being discharged—certainly a relief.

When it comes to vaccines, there’s encouraging news as well. A study found no link between Covid vaccines and any of the 75 birth defects monitored during pregnancy. Additionally, the Southern Hemisphere’s flu vaccine had an efficacy rate of about 50%, the same is expected for this year’s Northern Hemisphere vaccine. Not perfect, but it always helps, right? Interestingly, data suggests that Covid mRNA vaccines may enhance the immune system’s ability to combat cancer cells. Also, the shingles vaccine has shown significant reductions in risks for dementia, heart disease, and overall mortality.

Now, regarding food recalls:

  • Ben’s Ready Rice is being recalled due to small stones found.
  • A ground cinnamon recall due to lead has now expanded to 16 brands.
  • Black Sheep eggs with best-by dates through October have been recalled due to salmonella concerns.
  • Wawa’s strawberry lemonade and milk products are recalled over foreign matter contamination.
  • Raw Bistro Dog Fare’s beef entree is being recalled because of salmonella risks.
