Influential NY Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs will not support Zohran Mamdani and may resign following Hochul's surprising endorsement, according to sources.

Political Tensions in New York’s Democratic Party

In a surprising turn, longtime Democratic leader Jay Jacobs has decided not to back Zoran Mamdani for New York City mayor. Reports suggest he might even step away from supporting Governor Kathy Hochul’s agenda, which some view as leaning too far left.

Jacobs issued a pointed message, indicating a fundamental difference in their approaches despite a shared concern over income inequality in America. “We agree this is a critical issue, but we disagree on how to address it,” he stated.

He also expressed strong opposition to Mamdani’s views regarding Israel and other significant policy issues. “I reject the so-called ‘American democratic socialists’ platform,” Jacobs said, asserting that it does not reflect true Democratic values or policies. For these reasons, he remains opposed to Mamdani as a candidate.

The situation is compounded by rumors that Jacobs may resign following Hochul’s recent endorsement of Mamdani. Insiders say that Jacobs, the party chair in Nassau County, feels unsupported and frustrated, as Mamdani doesn’t resonate well with local voters.

“The governor put Jacobs in a tough spot,” said a party official. “He feels cornered, especially with Mamdani’s stance on issues important to many voters.” There’s been speculation about how Jacobs can continue to lead locally if he struggles to support the Democratic candidate in New York City.

While Hochul has been reaching out in an attempt to unite the party, sources close to the situation insist that the damage might already be done. Some believe that Jacobs’ departure is exaggerated and that he will ultimately remain in his post.

A representative for the Hochul campaign mentioned that discussions about their future have not occurred since Jacobs’ statement was made public. “The governor is focused on determining what’s best for the party,” the spokesperson noted.

This divide illustrates growing tensions between moderate and more progressive factions within the Empire State’s Democratic Party. Senator Mike Gianaris criticized Jacobs for not backing candidates who have been selected by Democratic voters, questioning his role as a party leader.

Others around the party suggest that Jacobs’ dislike for democratic socialism might lead him to consider stepping down. Elected as the Democratic chair in 2019, Jacobs has had a tumultuous relationship with Hochul since she took office following Andrew Cuomo’s resignation in 2021. Many within the party have voiced their dissatisfaction with Jacobs, blaming him for setbacks in the 2022 midterm elections.

As Democrats in Long Island face significant challenges, the split between Jacobs and Hochul might complicate their chances. The situation could impact candidates like Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen, both of whom have tough races ahead and are opposed to Mamdani’s platform.

Former Governor David Paterson remarked on Jacobs’ statement, noting it seemed to cast blame on Hochul. He pointed out the need for party cohesion moving forward, especially after upcoming elections.

Concerns were raised regarding Jacobs’ commitment to the party, with sources mentioning that he controversially allowed Cuomo access to the party’s voter database after his loss in the primary. This has raised eyebrows among party members, worrying that his actions undermine support for the chosen candidate.

As discussions continue, the question remains: Can Jacobs maintain his position while distancing himself from a candidate viewed unfavorably by many party members? The coming weeks may be critical in resolving these tensions.
