Dexter Lawrence Returns to Action

Dexter Lawrence is set to make his return following some practice absences due to an elbow issue.

After missing a couple of practice sessions, he participated in a limited manner on Saturday and was on the field for the Giants’ match against the Patriots on Monday.

Defensive line coach Andre Patterson noted that Lawrence was mainly allowed to rush the quarterback during the third down for the last three quarters of last week’s game. He took “two direct shots” to his surgically repaired elbow during the second and third defensive drives, which prevented him from being on the field for any of the Lions’ significant runs.

“Most players I know would have probably stepped back in his position,” Patterson mentioned. “We had to find a way for him to at least keep himself safe. He was determined to push through for his teammates, but his arm wasn’t cooperating.”

“I managed to keep him in the game during the first half by using him on third downs. It was the same in the second half—he kept us updated on when he could play.” He has an incredible spirit.”

Lawrence continues to dismiss claims of persistent elbow pain since he dislocated it last Thanksgiving.

This could explain a drop in his performance; his number of sacks fell from nine in 12 games to just half a sack in the same number of games, despite being double-teamed more than any other player in the NFL.

“It just irritated another part of my elbow,” Lawrence explained. “But I’m in good spirits because I’m committed to my recovery.”

He emphasized there was never any doubt about his availability for Monday’s game, even though the Giants (2-10) aren’t in the playoff race anymore.

It’s unclear whether he will participate fully or remain focused on rushing the passer, given that the Giants have the worst rushing defense in the league. Patterson challenged a theory raised by WFAN radio analyst Carl Banks during the broadcast. Banks suggested Lawrence was taken out during a crucial moment in overtime when Jahmil Gibbs scored on a 69-yard touchdown run.

“That decision had nothing to do with rotations,” Patterson said. “Honestly, I find it a bit insulting. I’ve been doing this for years with great teams and players. You think I would pull my best players on the first play of overtime?”

Interim head coach Mike Kafka expressed deep frustration over Lawrence’s limited contribution.

“I almost cried on the sideline,” Kafka admitted regarding Lawrence’s struggle.

“That’s more of a figure of speech,” Lawrence replied with a chuckle. “Of course, I’d love to be out there as one of the key players on the team, but that wasn’t how it was planned.”

“Dre and I were getting things figured out, and it just happened that we couldn’t connect at that moment. I love the game, and I’ll be on the field as much as possible.”

Friday marked a year since Lawrence’s elbow fracture, although he missed practice that day.

“A few people mentioned it to me,” he said, “but it didn’t make me feel any worse.”
