Despite missing three-fifths of their starting lineup, the Nets managed to beat the Rockets 120-96, playing in front of a vibrant crowd of 18,003 at Barclays Center.
Brooklyn was short eight players for this game, including key starters Michael Porter Jr., Egor Demin, and Terrence Mann.
Kevin Durant, now a former star, led with 22 points and 11 assists, shooting at an impressive 57.3 percent from the floor.
This season, the Nets hold the fifth spot in lottery odds, just a point ahead of the Hornets.
At one point, they found themselves trailing by as much as 21-7, with the team down by double digits for over 28 minutes. They struggled to compete with Houston’s size, particularly against Alperen Sengun, who registered 20 points with a plus-30 rating.
Cam Thomas topped the Nets’ score with 21 points off the bench, hitting 8 of 13 shots. Yet, the team’s three-point shooting was merely 45 percent, making only 10 out of 30 attempts, and no other player managed more than 14 points.
Coach Jordi Fernandez remarked before the game, “It’s not just about replacing the missing trio. They each contribute uniquely, and we have a strong next-man mentality.” He also emphasized the importance of team effort. “There’s a big opportunity for players to step up and play in new roles, especially against a strong team. Everyone must bring something positive to the game.”
Ziare Williams scored 14 points in his first start since November, while Danny Wolf contributed nine points, five assists, and four rebounds in his initial starting role.
“When things aren’t going your way,” Fernandez stated, reflecting on the game, “you have to fight. We were down by 11 at one point and putting in the effort. Sometimes all it takes is a goal from the opposing side to shift the momentum. We remain determined and strive to uplift our energy.”
The Rockets, on the other hand, improved their record to 21-10.
