A courageous survivor narrowly escaped death after being shot multiple times by a couple in North Carolina, commonly referred to as the state’s own Bonnie and Clyde. In a desperate moment, she reportedly used her nose to dial for help, reaching out to her boyfriend amid the chaos.
Autumn Setola, only 20 years old, was left fighting for her life in a local hospital on Tuesday. This came after suspects Cory Armstrong, 29, and Camryn Moore, 26, opened fire inside their home in Gastonia early Thursday morning.
“She is independent. She is strong… She’s a very kind girl,” shared Monica Shelley-Henson, the mother of Setola’s boyfriend, Jacob “Jake” Henson, with The Post on Tuesday.
“She’s definitely someone who will meet you where you are,” Shelley-Henson added.
The alleged assailants also lived at the residence on Forbes Road, where they shot and killed two victims and injured Setola and her stepbrother, Keaton, sending shockwaves through the suburban community situated just a few miles from the South Carolina border.
Setola sustained two gunshot wounds, rendering her arms useless during the attack, but she astoundingly managed to call her boyfriend using just the tip of her nose.
“She said, ‘I’ve been shot by Cory,’” Henson recalled. The chilling moment he received her desperate call left him frantic. “I ran. I had no shoes on. My shirt is backwards,” he explained.
Shelley-Henson confirmed that despite being unable to move her arms, Setola somehow got her phone and reached out to Jake.
In a panic, Henson dashed out of his house barefoot and sped toward the Forbes Road location while calling 911.
“I was driving over there and calling 911 to let them know,” he recounted.
Uncertain of what awaited him, Henson experienced overwhelming fear. “I was freaking out. Please let her live. I didn’t know how bad it was,” he revealed.
By the time he arrived, paramedics were already on the scene.
Both Setola and her stepbrother were transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, officials reported on Friday.
She remains in critical but stable condition, undergoing multiple surgeries daily, according to Shelley-Henson.
Authorities discovered the bodies of Victoria “Heather” Moore, 50, and Josiah Bumgardner, 38—the mother and uncle of Camryn Moore—at the scene, as confirmed by police.
The family noted that Josiah had transitioned from female to male prior to the incident.
The couple then fled across state lines into southern Ohio, prompting a manhunt that culminated in both dying from gunshot wounds in what appears to be a double-suicide following a police chase.
North Carolina authorities stated that the deaths are under investigation as a potential double-suicide, although this hasn’t been confirmed by the Ohio State Highway Patrol yet.
As for what ignited this supposed bloody rampage, the reasons remain unclear.
