Injury background that shows Michael Porter Jr. as a mentally strong addition to the Nets

Michael Porter Jr.’s Resilience and Evolving Role

Michael Porter Jr. shared his enduring love for basketball, despite having undergone three back surgeries. He’s keen to continue playing, both physically and mentally, though he admits he’s uncertain about the future.

Porter mentioned he would reassess his situation after this season. “Basketball is my passion. I want to play as much as I can,” he expressed. His commitment is evident as he plans to give his all this year and undergo another mental evaluation afterward.

He’s had his fair share of injuries but feels that recently, he’s been an “Iron Man.” Aside from shoulder troubles during the playoffs, he felt comfortable throughout the entire 82-game season.

Starting with 81 games two seasons ago, last season he was tied for team leadership with 77 games played. This achievement is even more significant considering the challenges he faced early in his career.

Following a herniated disc and a third back surgery in December 2021, he dealt with nerve damage that required him to wear orthotics. These experiences led him to seek non-traditional methods to manage his pain.

“A lot of it is physical effort, but it also requires mental resilience,” Porter said. He credited Nicole Sachs, a practitioner who helped him navigate his back problems. “I didn’t realize how mental aspects influence recovery, so I adopted a more holistic approach during rehab,” he added, reflecting on his growth since then.

Sachs is noted as a prominent mind-body clinician. While he acknowledges that not all NBA players explore these unconventional routes, Porter’s struggles have set him apart.

Porter remarked on his transformation after embracing this new approach. “After my third surgery, I knew I had to switch things up; finding her has been a game changer,” he shared. He feels that this journey has shaped him significantly.

Jordi Fernandez, now head coach and a former assistant at Denver, highlighted the mental toughness required to battle through such serious injuries. “It’s impressive what he’s achieved given everything,” he noted, acknowledging Porter’s resilience.

Moving forward, Fernandez sees potential in Porter’s new role as a scorer. “I want him to be aggressive. I’ll encourage him to shoot and make smart cuts,” the coach outlined. He won’t demand much dribbling, but he encourages rebounding and shooting.

Porter is adapting to the mid-post area, where he aims to leverage his skills effectively. “I can rack up easy points from there,” he stated, reflecting on the comfort he feels in this position. “It’s a strategic spot, especially when the pace slows down late in games,” he noted, acknowledging the adjustments necessary as he explores his new responsibilities.
