Kyle Serafin, a former FBI agent and whistleblower, has a theory about what really caused would-be assassin Thomas Crooks to pull the trigger on July 13.

“The Playbook basically says, ‘I found you online, and you have a lot of really stupid ideas, some of which are violent, so I’m going to encourage all of those stupid, violent ideas. I’m a CHS, which is a confidential informant for the FBI, or an online undercover agent, called an UCE,'” Seraphin explains.
“‘We encourage you to go ahead and do all the ridiculous ideas you can think of, and not only that, we’ll help you make it happen within the limits of what you have. Oh, you need a belt-fed thermal sight, but you only have $940? Luckily, for just $88.99 today, I’ll help my friend get it for him. He’s a weapons expert,'” Seraphin said, noting that the gun would probably be a dud.
As the agent continues to train the subject, the subject begins to solidify the plan.
“The guy says, ‘Hey, I’m being told to commit terrorism, I’m being told to commit terrorism, I’m going to commit terrorism, but I’m not going to wait for some new friend to give me something, I’m going to steal my dad’s rifle, because it’s right there,'” he says.
“So I didn’t wait for the government to send me a disabled gun with a safety on and no firing pin, or just a gun with the firing pin scraped off,” Serafin said. “What should have been a smooth crackdown turned into a real gun. I’ve seen that happen many times.”
Seraphin calls these “trap jobs,” and argues that they are “morally entrapped, if not legally equivalent.”
“If I wanted to wear a tinfoil hat, this is the one I’d wear,” he added.
Gonzales was intrigued.
“So I know they would do that, and I know it seems odd that this lone 20-year-old was able to get into the building,” she said.
“I don’t think they have any moral fear of leading someone down that path,” Serafin says. “The goal is to stop it, so they can get the statistics and the accolades and tell everyone how we saved the world, even though we created terrorism. We stopped terrorism. That’s what the FBI does.”
