Electric Box Theater: A Unique Performance Space

Unexpectedly, small stages have emerged in even the most unremarkable places, turning a typical street fixture into a vibrant performance venue.

This venue is known as the Electric Box Theater. It’s a compact space nestled within a common utility box, effectively converting a dull metal cabinet into a miniature stage. Located at Hewitt Street and Traction Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, it represents the latest project by street artist SC Mero.

From its exterior, the unassuming metal box is designed to blend in with urban life, featuring a synthetic concrete base that melds with the city’s grit. Don’t be fooled, though—when you turn the combination locks, you’ll be greeted by red velvet-lined walls, “inspired by the golden age of downtown Los Angeles in the early 20th century, specifically the silent film palaces of Broadway,” Melo shared on Instagram. The interior includes two framed pictures of electrical boxes, a clock, and a golden mirror.

The idea is straightforward. Anyone can perform here—be it a sketch, a song, a poem reading, a dance, or even leading a walking tour, either inside or just in front of the box. To book a spot, you can message Melo directly on Instagram. She’ll help you reserve a time and provide the keycode.

Debuting in February, this space serves as a minimalist street theater.

“I’m not a huge fan of 2D, but I envisioned a kind of pseudo 3D/4D box where people could step inside and perform,” Melo explained in a social media post.

The soft opening on February 20 featured a musical ensemble, a saxophone performance, and original poetry readings, celebrating this new artistic venture.
