Inside infamous NYC prison where Maduro and his wife are detained

Maduro’s Downfall: From Luxury to Isolation

Nicolás Maduro, the Venezuelan dictator who once indulged in lavish meals and resided in opulence while his nation faced severe famine, now finds himself in what some are calling a “hell on earth” in a Brooklyn prison, where heavily armed guards ensure he remains behind bars.

The 63-year-old Maduro, along with his 69-year-old wife, Syria, has been placed in solitary confinement at the infamous Metropolitan Detention Center following their unexpected capture by elite U.S. forces in Caracas early Saturday morning.

On the day after their arrest, multiple heavily armed law enforcement officers in military attire, wielding M4 machine guns, were seen patrolling outside the MDC. Around a dozen more officers mingled with demonstrators expressing both support for and opposition to the alleged drug traffickers.

Maduro is slated to appear in Manhattan federal court for arraignment on Monday at noon. Authorities may even close the Brooklyn Bridge to secure his transport, reminiscent of the measures taken with Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

This federal prison, which has seen a range of high-profile inmates—from Guzmán to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs—contrasts sharply with the luxurious lifestyle Maduro enjoyed during his reign.

The former president is awaiting trial in a communal setting that has faced legal action over complaints of inadequate food, unsanitary conditions, and consistent power outages, all of which enraged many in Venezuela. It’s a far cry from his past, where he enjoyed extravagant meals, like a gourmet steak dinner he had in Istanbul in 2018.

The Sunset Park facility has such a troubled reputation that some judges have even refrained from sending detainees there.

According to a statement from the Legal Aid Society, “Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center is a facility notorious for dangerous conditions.” This sentiment highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of inmates within its walls.

The MDC has gained a reputation for neglect and abuse, with inmates experiencing issues such as heating failures during winter months, receiving food alleged to contain maggots, lacking necessary medical care, and facing violence due to severe understaffing.

New York’s federal defense team has previously filed lawsuits over what they described as “inhumane” conditions at the detention center, which has been criticized for being poorly managed.

An unfortunate incident in 2019 left inmates without heat or electricity for an entire week during winter—a situation that underlines the dire conditions within the facility.
