Inside look at conflicts that finally ended Patriots’ dynasty

It’s a miracle the Patriots were able to find any success over the past decade, when head coach Bill Belichick ran a joyless dictatorship.

Many of team owner Robert Kraft and quarterback Tom Brady’s closest friends and family would have you believe the final two episodes of the AppleTV+ documentary. “The Dynasty: New England Patriots” Enter the tense final three seasons of the Brady and Belichick partnership and their final parting ways during the 2020 offseason.

The Post has given screeners access to review “Dynasty,” and eight episodes are currently available.

But the story of how “Brady and Belichick” grew over time into “Brady vs. Belichick” is told in the finale like never before.

If Belichick had stepped down as head coach sooner, would Brady have remained a Patriot instead of signing with the Buccaneers for three seasons and winning a Super Bowl?

“Yes, I feel very strongly about that,” Kraft said. “To be honest, I didn’t want to move on from either of us, but the point is, being together for 20 years is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my business career.”

How heroic.

The final two episodes are a sort of venting of frustration after players were freed from the clichéd norms they adhered to during Belichick’s 24-year tenure, which led to six Super Bowl championships. It plays a similar role.

The Dynasty theme runs through, and candid interviews about taboo football topics like Spygate and Aaron Hernandez’s criminal activities stand out in the genre, but it’s still surprising to hear criticism of Belichick. It’s the right thing to do.

Belichick, portrayed as a schematic and motivating mastermind in previous episodes, is changed to an unmistakable villain in the end credits, which reveal that the copyright holder is “Kraft Dianacy LLC 2024.” Masu.

Perhaps none of Belichick’s on-camera answers to interviewer questions, with his patently tight-lipped, mumbling opacity, are as shocking as Brady’s accusations.

“Even if I wanted to play until I was 50, I wasn’t going to re-sign a new contract,” Brady said. “I knew I wasn’t going to sign up for any more, given what had happened so far.”

The atmosphere of the 2018 Super Bowl-winning season was set as the Patriots cruised to the AFC championship and despite losing to the USA in Super Bowl 52, teammates discussed the horrors of entering a lifeless facility. As revealed in the story, it was decided the year before. Eagles.

Kraft said this was compounded by Brady’s then-wife, Gisele Bündchen, who complained during the offseason that “Belichick, he doesn’t treat my Tommy like a man.”

Teammates revealed that the win no longer masks tensions between Brady and Belichick, and that a mediator was needed because there was a lack of direct communication.

Yet somehow the Patriots defeated the Rams in Super Bowl 53.

“It was basically a silent relationship,” Kraft said. “There was tension before, but now it was completely dysfunctional…He was a threat to Bill’s full authority. He didn’t want Tommy there.”

Why did Kraft ultimately choose Belichick over Brady?

That question is never asked directly.

But Kraft questioned Belichick putting his interests ahead of the team’s for the first time, citing the never-explained decision to bench top cornerback Malcolm Butler against the Eagles. hinted. Nick Falls.

“That loss was Bill’s fault,” Kraft said. “Honestly, my head coach is tough. But I was willing to put up with it as long as I could win. So, heading into the next Super Bowl, I wanted to keep an eye on him.”

Everything changed when Belichick outsmarted Rams head coach Sean McVay by implementing a new zone defense.

And that’s when it became clear to Brady that Belichick wasn’t going anywhere.

Brady and Belichick’s final season, which ended in a wild-card playoff elimination in 2019, has been completely overshadowed in favor of a more circular approach to their 20 years together, but their parting ways have been ‘s retelling offers a moment of poignant contrast. : Brady’s voice cracks with suppressed emotion, but Belichick never breaks his usual monotone, as he does when giving traffic reports.

In hindsight, Kraft seems like the wrong choice, as Belichick went 29-38 in four seasons after Brady before parting ways with the Patriots in January.

For others, it’s just one more chance to laugh one last time at a Hall of Fame coach. He even used Belichick’s own insults — he once compared Brady to high school quarterback Johnny Foxborough — against him.

“We could have gotten a kid from Foxboro High School,” receiver Danny Amendola said. He said, “To let you know we shouldn’t let Tom Brady go.”
