Inside the B-2 stealth bomber attack on Iran's nuclear facilities

B-2 Crew Discusses Secret Iranian Mission

Nob Noster, Missouri – In an exclusive opportunity, Fox News Digital spoke with Colonel Josh Wiitala and his team at Whiteman Air Force Base regarding the recent historic B-2 bombing mission targeting Iran. This operation, known as Midnight Hammer, involved a challenging 30-hour mission in which seven stealth bombers executed the first combat deployment of a 30,000-pound bunker-buster bomb at an Iranian nuclear site.

Colonel Wiitala shared insights into the extensive preparation that enabled around 4,000 personnel to assist in this high-stakes operation, where they faced significant challenges. The Colonel mentioned, “We have a low observable culture. Everyone is working on secrets to carry out our mission. Years of exercises and teamwork made this possible.”

This mission saw 14 of the trained B-2 pilots deliver a powerful GBU-57 bomb at the nuclear site, which demonstrated the efficacy of their planning and execution.

Wiitala emphasized that experience played a crucial role in selecting the crew, stating, “I was watching the crew prepare, thinking about how much they trained for this. They were incredibly skilled.” However, he didn’t delve into specifics regarding notifications or the strategies utilized during the flight, as many details remain classified.

Upon returning from their grueling mission, the pilot reported feeling “totally exhausted.” The operation marked a historic moment for the crew, described by Wiitala as likely one of the most significant attacks they would participate in.

The B-2 bomber itself, while still effective, is aging, and plans for a new aircraft, the B-21, are underway. This development aims to enhance capabilities at a more cost-effective rate.

The recent strikes targeted Iranian nuclear sites, effectively disabling centrifuges previously critical to uranium enrichment. Ongoing analysis of these actions indicates a significant setback for Iran’s nuclear ambitions, though uncertainties about the long-term implications remain.

In the wake of the initiative, reactions within and outside the military reveal a cautious optimism overlooking the operation’s success. Although Iran’s response has included limited retaliatory actions, the overall impact of the strikes continues to unfold.
